Care Guide — How to Wash and Store Your Ethnic Wear

Your ethnic wear is an investment in craft, culture, and beauty. With the right care, your Ginni by Ritivesh pieces will stay vibrant and beautiful for years. Here's our complete care guide for your handcrafted ethnic wear.

Washing Your Ethnic Wear

Cotton Kurtas

• Always wash in cold water — hot water can shrink the fabric.
• Use a mild detergent or gentle liquid soap.
• Hand wash is preferred for the first few washes to preserve colour.
• If machine washing, use the delicate/gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag.
• Do not wring — gently squeeze out excess water instead.
• Wash dark colours separately for the first 2-3 washes to prevent colour bleeding.

Embroidered & Chikankari Pieces

• Always hand wash embroidered pieces — never machine wash.
• Turn the garment inside out before washing to protect the embroidery.
• Use cold water and very mild detergent.
• Do not soak for more than 10 minutes.
• Gently pat dry with a soft towel — never rub.

Printed Fabrics (Bandhej, Warli, Block Print)

• Wash separately for the first few washes as colours may bleed slightly.
• Use cold water and colour-safe detergent.
• Avoid direct sunlight while drying to prevent fading of prints.
• Dry in shade for best colour retention.

Drying Your Ethnic Wear

• Always dry in shade — direct sunlight fades colours and weakens fabric fibres.
• Hang kurtas on wide hangers to maintain their shape.
• Lay dupattas flat to dry to prevent stretching.
• Never use a tumble dryer for handcrafted or embroidered pieces.

Ironing Tips

• Iron cotton on medium heat while slightly damp for best results.
• Always iron embroidered pieces inside out to protect the embroidery.
• Use a pressing cloth between the iron and printed fabrics.
• Steam ironing is gentler and works beautifully on most ethnic wear.

Storing Your Ethnic Wear

• Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• Fold kurtas neatly or hang on padded hangers to prevent creasing.
• Store dupattas separately, rolled or folded in tissue paper to prevent creasing.
• Use cotton garment bags — avoid plastic covers which trap moisture.
• Place a neem sachet or lavender bag in your wardrobe to keep insects away naturally.
• Air your ethnic wear every few months even if not worn — this keeps the fabric fresh.

Special Care for Festive Pieces

After wearing your festive kurta sets or sarees, air them out before storing. Spot clean any stains immediately with cold water and mild soap. For heavily embroidered or embellished pieces, dry cleaning is recommended.

With a little love and care, your Ginni by Ritivesh pieces will remain as beautiful as the day you first wore them. 💛
